When Sundays Aren’t An Option {Review}

June 28, 2017 By mollieh02 2 Comments

This year has been about redefining life for me.  So I would like to talk about redefining how we teach our children about Jesus.  I am a single mom with two wild and crazy little boys.  Let me tell you, co-parenting is hard!  Especially when you share time with your littles and can’t do all the things you would like to do with and for them.  For me, one of the biggest problems is that they go to their dad’s on weekends, so they don’t go to church.  They are rarely with me on a weekend and he does not take them.

What do you do when taking your kids to church on Sundays isn’t an option?

There are resources available for you if you just look for them.  There are books and children’s devotionals, even tv shows that teach the lessons from the Bible, and don’t forget the most valuable resource of all, The Bible itself!  I will leave you to sort through those.  But there is one that I just have to mention.  I love this family devotional written by my friend Susan Chamberlain Shipe!

In 52 Commands of Jesus for Children Susan not only provides 52 scripture based devotionals, she also sprinkles in tips for helping to drive the points home.  While gently lending a reminder to parents that we too are still ever learning these lessons alongside our children.  I’ve never seen a devotional of this magnitude that truly teaches both parent and child.  This truly is a devotional for the whole family!  While there are 52 lessons contained within these pages, I believe the true lesson for parents is to walk in grace while teaching our children.  We after all have been at it a lot longer than they have and we still haven’t perfected our walk with Jesus.

You can pick up your copy here!!!  I promise you won’t be sorry you did!

Did I mention the coloring pages?  There is one that goes along with each weekly lesson and you can print however many you want off from here!  Your kids will love them!  Mine did.  Mommy may have even colored a page!

But what else is there?  This past school year I accepted an invitation from a dear friend to go to a weekly women’s Bible study group at her mother’s church.  They had childcare in the form of an AWANA program.  AWANA is a nonprofit program that teaches children to know, love and serve Christ.

My kids absolutely loved it!  They had such fun every Wednesday night!  They would fight over who got  to recite their weekly verses for me to show me that they had memorized them first!  The best part, they weren’t just learning them and forgetting them.  One night I was telling my oldest about a song that refers to John 3:16.  I started the verse and he jumped right in and finished it!  Nothing will make a momma’s heart smile more than knowing here babies and learning about Jesus every week from a great team.  But sadly, when the school year came to an end, so did the AWANA program.  What now?

Now comes what I affectionately like to call the Tour De VBS!  We have a ton of local churches that provide free week long Vacation Bible School programs for children, and they are spread out throughout the summer months.  They are usually around two hours a night for a week and they are theme based Bible programs.  My kids are currently in their third week of VBS, this week at our own church which excited this mom!  It gives them a chance to learn about Jesus and have some interaction with other kids their ages.  It is hard to go from being in school with classmates everyday to being home with mom everyday.

There is always of course, that they learn by example.  When they ask me if I went to church on Sunday I had better be able to truthfully tell them that I did.  They see me reading my Bible throughout the week and it is always on the table by my computer.  It may not be perfect and it is definitely non-traditional, but that is what we do to combat the problem of not being able to go to church on Sundays.  Sometimes you just have to think outside the box.

Do you have any other non-traditional tips for me?  I am always looking for ways to improve and win at this mom thing!

Godspeed,

When Jesus Was A Green-Eyed Brunette {Review & Giveaway}

December 21, 2016 By mollieh02 2 Comments

About the Book:

When Jesus Was a Green-Eyed Brunette weaves heartwarming and miraculous stories of Jesus showing up in ordinary people, revealing that He knows us and is fully present in our everyday circumstances, especially in our difficulties.  Those hurting and weary from worn-out religion are longing for a fresh touch from the living Jesus.  Best-selling author Max Davis challenges us to do more than simply receive God’s grace–we need to allow grace to soften, change, and shape us.  As you read this book, you will laugh, cry, and come face-to-face with the living Jesus, much like Davis did, when he found Him living in a green-eyed brunette.

As Davis puts it, “Jesus is very much alive today and still does incredible things–sometimes supernatural things–through us!”

About the Author:

Max Davis is the author of over 20 published books and has been featured in USA Today and Publishers Weekly, and has appeared on TODAY and The 700 Club.  He holds degrees in journalism and biblical studies and is a much-sought-after speaker for churches and organizations worldwide.  He and his wife, Alanna, live on forty beautiful acres, under an umbrella of oak trees, in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana.

My Thoughts:

I love this book!  I love how Max Davis challenges you to rethink how the experiences we walk through every day shapes us and the world we come into daily contact with.  Did you know that you can be an international missionary from the comfort of your own home?  Do you know that every hurt you go through can bring healing to someone else?  Take a minute to think about that.  Let it soak in.

Have you ever heard ‘The Voice’?  And no I don’t mean the reality TV show.  The voice of God comes to us in many ways.  Join Max Davis as he tells his  story, and some others too, of how God speaks.  How God revealed his purpose in life to him.  How God used his own pain to shape him and to help others as they walked through similar seasons of pain.

This book will give you hope.  This book will challenge you to push through your own boundaries.

Bible Journaling Kit {Review & Giveaway}

December 1, 2016 By mollieh02 6 Comments

I love my journaling Bible.  It’s pretty with a flower print on the outside covers.  I’ve had it for nearly a year.  It was a Christmas gift last year.  I find Bible journaling intriguing.  The act of art as a part of Bible study just makes sense to me.  Still the pages of my Bible were unmarked until recently.  I do a little bit of instructed painting, but I still don’t consider myself an artist by any stretch of the word.  I was afraid to try to make pretty pictures in my Bible as they would inevitably not match the picture in my head.  But then I got the chance to try out this Bible Journaling Kit!

About the kit:

Create a work of art in the pages of your favorite Bible.  Draw, color, or journal your thoughts, dreams, and prayers.  Highlight your favorite verses or the encouragements that speak to your heart with pencils, stickers, and tabs.

15230816_10209894385249700_800509618225215122_n

Kit includes:

4 sheets of word stickers

4 sheets of alphabet stickers

24 tab stickers

8 colored pencil twists

1 journaling pen

1 pouch with adjustable strap to fit Bibles of all sizes

1 ruled page protector mat with tracing lines

My thoughts:

This kit takes some of the guess work out of Bible journaling.  It gives you the freedom to work at your skill level, and to develop your skills at your own pace.  I love all the stickers!  FYI: They are easy to take off the super thin Bible pages if you don’t like where you place them.  You can go super simple and just use the stickers for a page.

15253575_10209894387489756_4156877491704829446_n

Or you can get a little bit more complex with the tabs and the pencils.  I used my tabs a little unconventionally on this page.

Note: I always see people coloring whole scenes over the scriptures in their Bibles and I never quiet got that because why would they make it so they couldn’t see the words?  So, I bit the bullet and colored over a scripture I know well and have pretty well memorized just to see.  I even colored over it a second time to make my picture a little darker.  You can still see the words just fine.

15241288_10209894383449655_794759292218643999_n

This kit gave someone who wanted to try Bible journaling, but was a little afraid of it, the tools to dip my toes in.  I love the results I got.  I think I might even try drawing some pictures in the future.  FYI: I still practiced on notebook paper before I actually wrote in my Bible.

The Giveaway:

I’m thrilled to be able to offer one of my winners a chance to win a Bible Journaling Kit of their own!  To enter follow the directions in the Rafflecopter App below.  The giveaway will run until  Monday December 6, 2016 at midnight.  Winner will be displayed in the Rafflecopter App as well as emailed.  Must have a valid email address to win.  Open to US entrants only.

Mother & Son {Review & Giveaway}

June 1, 2016 By mollieh02 2 Comments

Mother Son

About the Book:

A new book from W Publishing Group/Harper Collins asks you to consider the all-important mother/son relationship in a new way: respect, as in the mother should respect the son.

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, author of Love and Respect – a landmark book that transformed millions of marital relationships – is launching his latest book, Mother & Son: The Respect Effect.  In Mother & Son, Dr. Eggerichs proposes that while showing love is important to a son, showing him respect is key to his heart, and what will transform the mother/son relationship.  Of course, to a lot of people, that will sound backwards – shouldn’t it start with the son respecting the mother??

Since the importance of the mother/son relationship crosses all age/race/religion barriers, this is a topic applicable to all – regardless if they agree or disagree with Dr. Eggerichs’ method.

Find out more about it and get three free chapters here!

About the Author:

Emerson Eggerichs has a BA in biblical studies from Wheaton College, a MA in communication from Wheaton College Graduate School, and a MDiv from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.  An internationally known expert on male-female relationships, he has a PhD in child and family ecology from Michigan State University.

Emerson and his wife, Sarah, present the Love and Respect Conference, both live and by video, to thousands of people each year, including groups such as the NFL, NBA, PGA, Nave Seals, and members of congress.  Emerson was the senior pastor of Trinity Church in Lansing for almost twenty years,  He and Sarah have been married since 1973 and have three adult children.

My Thoughts:

Have you ever read something and then sat back and thought to yourself, “Now why didn’t I think of that?”

Why are the simplest concepts sometimes the hardest ones for us to grasp?  We know that men grow up from little boys.  Do we also think that when they turn 18 all of a sudden they start needing different things?  No, the same things that make our men function are the things that make our little boys thrive!  I can’t wait to put the practices in this book in motion in my own home and see how my relationships with my little men grow and improve!

I love when someone smarter than I points out how the simplest changes can create the biggest impact in my situations, and then proves it with stories of real change!

I love this quote by Sarah Eggerichs, ” As a mother, it is never too early and never too late to apply this message of respect.  A boy is never too young and never too old.”

The Giveaway:

I’m thrilled to be able to offer one of my winners a chance to win a copy of Mother & Son: The Respect Effect.  To enter follow the directions in the Rafflecopter App below.  The giveaway will run until Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at midnight.  Winner will be displayed in the Rafflecopter App as well as emailed.  Must have a valid email address to win.

Wise Guys {Review & Giveaway}

May 30, 2016 By mollieh02 Leave a Comment

wise guys

About the book:

For guys, more than ever, it’s a confusing world.  Your GPS doesn’t offer any maps showing how to get to the point of wisdom – and who likes asking for directions anyway?

But there are ways to get that guidance you need.  The answers may be all around you, in the form of guys you already know.  Wise guys.  More experienced guys.  Better-traveled guys.  Could there be ways to tap into their invaluable knowledge without enduring dull lectures or taking pages of notes?

Kent Evans has surrounded himself with these guys.  They have shown him all the back roads on the way to wisdom.  With a great deal of humor and an endless supply of stories, he wants to show you how to gather life-enriching truth from the guys in your own circle.

About the author:

Kent Evans

Kent Evans is the board chairman and co-founder of Manhood Journey, a ministry that helps fathers and mentors build the next generation of godly men.  Kent has personally experienced how the guidance of godly men can change the course of a life.  Today he is blessed with a solid 20-year marriage, four wonderful sons and a fulfilling life – largely because of what he’s learned from other men.  He lives in Louisville, Kentucky.  You can connect with him on twitter.

My thoughts:

Let me just say, I know this isn’t meant to be used as a parenting book, but it’s what I intend to use it for.  As a single mom to two rambunctious little boys, there are just some things I can’t teach them.  You can argue the point with me if you want, but boys and girls are created differently.  Our minds function differently than theirs.  If they didn’t there would not be separate books written for mothers of boys and mothers of girls.

Wise Guys is a great and easy read.  I may have woken up somewhere around 11:45 one night still holding the book with the lights still on.  I promise it’s a book you literally won’t want to put down when you start reading it!  I am a sucker for a heart warming story and this book is full of them.

I love the advice Kent gives on finding mentors.  Kent lays out an easy to follow plan that is beneficial in finding out what your specific wants for a mentor are and identifying the people who hold those traits.  Then he spends the rest of the book proving how his plan has worked in his own life.  My hope is that I can use the skills taught in this book to help steer my little guys toward mentors for their lives as they grow up.

The Giveaway:

I am thrilled to be able to give away a copy of Wise Guys to one of my readers.  The giveaway will run until Sunday, June 5th, 2016 at midnight.  To enter follow the directions in the Rafflecopter app below.  The winner will be displayed in the Rafflecopter as well as emailed.  Must have a valid email address to win.  You can preorder a copy of Wise Guys here.  The official release date is June 1, 2016!

Bearing Witness {Review and Giveaway}

May 25, 2016 By mollieh02 Leave a Comment

bearing witness

About the book:

What does it cost to follow Jesus?

For these men and women, the answer was: everything.

They were ready to give witness to Christ in the face of intense persecution, even if it cost them their lives.  From the stoning of Stephen in first-century Jerusalem to Nigerian Christians persecuted by Boko Haram today, these stories from around the world and through the ages will inspire greater faithfulness to the way of Jesus, reminding us what costly discipleship looks like in any age.

My thoughts:

I am grateful that as of yet I haven’t found myself in a situation that forced me to choose between my faith and my life.  I honestly don’t know which side would win out.  I would love to say I would stand firm on my faith in Jesus, but I guess you never really know until you find yourself there in that moment.  The men and women who’s stories are shared in the pages of Bearing Witness did just that.  They chose a side.  They stood firm on their faith.  They said I don’t care what you do to me.  You won’t get me to say my Jesus isn’t real.  In the Book of Acts Peter said, “We must obey God rather than men!”  Jesus said, “If you deny me before men I will deny you before the Father.”  From ancient Jerusalem to modern Nigeria they stood and in full obedience to God they laid down their lives for believing in the one true God.

These are stories that will inspire you to a greater faith.  They will leave you angry on behalf of those who were persecuted and grateful for them in the same breath.  They will make you question the strength of your own faith and set you on fire for the God who inspired those before us to gladly walk into death in order to spend an eternity by His side.

The Giveaway:

I am pleased to be able to offer one of my readers a chance to win a copy of Bearing Witness!  To enter follow the directions in the Rafflecopter app. below.  The giveaway will close at 12:00 AM on 06/01/2016.  The winner will be displayed in the Rafflecopter as well as emailed.  Must provide a valid email address to win.  In case you don’t win you can pick up a copy of Bearing Witness here.

8 Simple Tools For Raising Great Kids {Review}

April 17, 2016 By mollieh02 Leave a Comment

Communication is not an area I am strong in, and that definitely didn’t change when I had kids.  I may have actually gotten worse at it once my little ones came along.  I jumped at the chance to read and review for you 8 Simple Tools For Raising Great Kids!

8SimpleToolsForRaisingGreatKids_3D

About the book:

Whether you find parenting intuitive or impossible, we could all use a hand here and there.  Let child psychologist and father Todd Cartmell walk you through the nuts and bolts of healthy, effective parenting.

Using examples from his home and 20 years of professional practice, Todd gives eight essential and practical tools to help you:

  • Maintain a healthy relationship with your child
  • Develop a nurturing home culture
  • Correct behavior in lasting ways

Designed for busy parents, 8 Simple Tools breaks each tool into five short chapters that include a summary tip and application questions.  Use even half of the tools in your parenting, and your family dynamics will thrive.  Your relationship with your child will be built on love and trust, providing you with fertile ground for planting God’s wisdom in their heart, and ultimately, seeing them flourish.

About the author:

Dr. Todd Cartmell is a clinical child psychologist and author of several parenting books, including Flexible Kids and Keep the Siblings, Lose the Rivalry.  He is the creator of The Flexible Thinking Game and conducts parenting workshops around the country.  Todd and his wife, Lora, live in the Chicago area and have two sons.

My thoughts:

I found many gems within the pages of this book. You will find the pages of my copy are bathed in highlighter yellow.  This is an easy read and I highly recommend it for anyone who has kids.  I’m guilty of damaging my relationship with my children.  This book gives me hope that the damage can be repaired.  I have hope that it won’t always be like it is right now with them.  Our children are little mirrors that reflect back to us who we are, how we respond to situations, and how we communicate.  If you want to see a change in your children it has to start with you.  I love this line from the forward by Jill Savage, “If you’ve never thought of yourself as a leader, think again.  Parenting is really about leadership.”  It takes effort to be a leader- to raise the next generation.  This book has the tools to equip parent leaders in leading their children in better communication and beyond.

I can’t wait to see how the tools I learned while reading 8 Simple Tools For Raising Great Kids impacts the relationships I have with my children.  I have already found myself utilizing the pause tip from the first section.

Use the code GREATKIDS16 at www.moodypublishers.com and you will get 50% off when you purchase 8 Simple Tools For Raising Great Kids! (Code expires May 15, 2016)

My thoughts:

This book is beautiful!  You have to take a moment before you start reading to just flip through the pages and admire the beautiful design, which was designed by the author’s super talented husband!  It’s Thanksgiving today as I write this review so I have to take a moment and tell you how thankful I am that Asheritah took the time to write these sweet words and make them available for us to study.  She highlights 25 of the names of Jesus in this study.  With each name you learn something new, something different about Him.  What a blessing it is to be able to delve deeper into His heart and to share it with your family using the family devotional activities.  Do you desperately long to fall in love with Jesus?  Are you looking for a way to teach your children about the heart of Jesus?  You’ve picked up the right book!

More: From Messes to Miracles {Review and Giveaway}

May 4, 2015 By mollieh02 11 Comments

MORE_FNL_CVR

About the book:

People everywhere are looking for something more. They’re in the grocery store aisle behind you, in the nail chair beside you, singing praise songs in front of you, and perhaps in the mirror staring back at you. People feel messy; plagued by looming feelings of ineffectiveness, indifference, depression, and purposelessness.
Does this sound like you?
What if more of God is actually what’s missing from your life? Whether it’s a messy life or a messy problem, it can become a walking miracle when we see God anew and wholly surrender to Him.
You were made for more than surviving. Old stale religion never satisfies. Neither do the solutions the world has to offer. What all of us need is an encounter with God that sets our hearts ablaze. Tammie has seen this in her own life as well as in countless lives around her.  Join her in More for a picture of how you can move from a life marked by messes to one that is truly miraculous.

About the Author:

tammie_head--headshot Tammie Head will be the first to tell you that her life is a walking miracle.  God has taken her from utter depravity to living a life she never dreamed of.  Head’s desire for God is insatiable, and she cannot keep Him to herself.  The effect on others who come in contact with her is usually the same, Christians and non-Christians alike: they want to know God like she does.

My Thoughts:

As someone currently walking through a valley, trying desperately to find her way out; this book could not have come to me at a better time. Tammie takes those messy parts of life that nobody likes to talk about, the ones we would rather stuff in a box and put way, way back in the deepest corner of the closet, and she puts them on full display for all to see.  I applaud her for that.  It’s not an easy thing.  She truly is using her story for the glory of the one who made her.  I will warn you, this book will not leave you unchanged.  As I read my way through her story, it caused me to take pause and examine my own progress, whether I wanted to or not.  If you let it, this book will creep in find the dead parts of your faith and bring them to the light.  It will drive out superficial faith.  It will inspire change, but not only change, but a deeper joining to the spirit.  I will tell you, I want the kind of relationship Tammie shares with our God.  I am so thankful that God is never done.  He’s not done with Tammie, He’s not done with me and He’s not done with you either!

This book reads like Tammie is a friend sitting in your living room, telling you her story.  I bet she is an excellent speaker!

The Giveaway:

I am thrilled to be able to offer one of my readers a chance to win a copy of Tammie’s book: More; From Messes to Miracles!  To enter, click on the Rafflecopter link below and follow the prompts.  The giveaway will run until 11:59 PM on May 9, 2015.  The winner will be chosen at random and will show in the Rafflecopter as well as emailed.  Must have a valid email to enter.

About the books:
The Love Inspired product line is a series of 6 books that are released every month & only have a shelf-life of one month.  This set of books is on sale April 21- May 28. PERFECT gifts for Mother’s Day (May 10).

My thoughts:

Warning!!!  Make sure you have ample time to sit and read for awhile before you pick one of these books up.  I promise you once you pick one up you won’t be able to put it down again.  I stayed up reading until I was struggling to keep one eye open so I could keep going!

I loved these books!  I fancy myself a hopeless romantic, so these were right up my alley.  These aren’t your typical romance novels.  They are thankfully missing any hint of graphic sex scenes, cheating spouses and couples who forge on without any regard for being married first.  But don’t worry, they are definitely lacking nothing in the emotion department.  They pull you in, wrapping you in a warm hug of sweat emotion, complete with all the internal battles and insecurities that flow through the female, and male, mind as we stand in the face of blooming love.  These are true love stories that leave you feeling hopeful.

I absolutely recommend the Love Inspired Series!  To get you started here is a coupon to save $1 on any Love Inspired purchase!
